Overview

The quietest route into one of the most scenic settings in the Southwest. This hike starts in an exposed wash and continues deeper into the canyons of Escalante. Streams and springs appear as we enter the flowing water of Coyote Gulch. Continuing on we’ll see the incredible Jacob Hamblin Arch, hanging gardens, natural springs, waterfalls, and camp in oasis settings surrounded by towering red canyon walls.

Moderately strenuous: must be able to hike up to 10 miles per day while carrying 35-45 lbs, through sections of cold water. Beginner backpackers are welcome as long as you have experience hiking at a moderately strenuous level. Temperatures will be in the 60s-70s during the day and 30s- 40s at night

Saturday, October 15

6 pm: Orientation/meet-and-greet at Best Western Abbey Inn St. George, UT. We'll go over safety, trip details, and disperse backpacking gear.

Fly into St George Airport or take the shuttle from Las Vegas or Salt Lake City Airport on your own, transportation to the hotel is not included- taxis services are available. Please make sure you schedule flights and shuttles with ample time to meet the group.

Sunday, October 16

6-8:45 am: Breakfast available at hotel

8:45 am: Meet in parking lot ready to go, 9 am departure

9 am: Drive 4 hours from St. George to Coyote Gulch trailhead (w/ bathroom break in Escalante)

Hike 6.5 miles from Red Well trailhead to confluence of Coyote Gulch and Hurricane Wash

7 pm: Dinner, set up camp, followed by free time

Monday, October 17

8:30 am: Breakfast, break down camp

10:30 am: Begin 2.5 mile hike to Jacob Hamblin Arch

Explore and relax at Jacob Hamblin Arch beach and amphitheater - refill water from natural springs, take amazing photos, eat a light lunch or snacks

Continue backpacking 1.5-2.5 miles to campsite

7 pm: Dinner, set up camp, followed by free time

Tuesday, October 18

7:30 am: Breakfast, enjoy morning golden light opportunities

Today is our most relaxed day, we don’t need to pack up camp and will enjoy a day hike to waterfalls, natural arches, rock art, and swimming areas. Stop for lunch and relax under an alcove, about 2-4 miles from our camp each way. Options for a group of hikers who want to day hike 8-10 miles for a longer hike downstream to see the rest of Coyote Gulch.

Wednesday, October 19

7 am: Breakfast, pack up camp

8:30 am: Begin hike back to Red Well trailhead - about 10-11 miles with a return trip to Jacob Hamblin Arch to refill water at springs and one last stop for photos

6 pm: Drive 4 hours back to St. George with stop for “Victory Dinner” at restaurant in Escalante (not included)

11 pm: Return and drop off at St. George Best Western Abbey Inn

Fly out the next day or continue your adventure on your own from here, we cannot guarantee an exact arrival time in St. George so do not schedule a flight close to this time. Times on this itinerary are estimates and dependent on group hiking pace.
